Training from the ground up

Overcoming the fear of water

imageIt is important to let your horse process.  Lead or ride him to the water you intend to teach him to cross or enter. When you get as close as the horse can comfortably get and you are riding him, stop and get off. Take out your long line's (you can drive him through this or do the longe line method) and work him up to going closer and closer.  Do not force him.  Let him stand and think. Your horse should be able to reach down and sniff and touch the water with his lips and nose so do not have his head tied up or the reins over the saddle.

He may even want to paw at the water and that is okay too he is processing and trying.

Let him stand as long as he is thinking about crossing.  When his focus changes from Left brain (thinking) To Right brain (Running away) Ask him again to get close and consider crossing.  Be gentle and try to feel what your horse is going through.  This could be a trap and he could die (in his mind) he would prefer to run away.  If you have his trust (from previous experiences with you) this will probably only take a few minutes for him to go in the water.  If he does not feel safe around you it could take a long time and you will probably get very frustrated.  Stay calm and keep focused your anger will confuse and frighten your horse. Once you have him going in and out of the water three or four times staying calm and relaxed you should get on him and ride him through the same water several times.

I can remember two horses I had in training taking Three days of this to finally step in the water.  I would work until I was just too tired to continue then do a circle as close as comfortable for the horse and stop for the day.  The third day seemed to be the day both of them were willing to try to cross.

If you do not force the horse you will teach him and you will learn too.  Horses are great teachers and therapists!

Please feel free to email me if you have any questions or need help with instructions.

Be relaxed, safe and happy horses are God's special gift of friends.
